7 Common Oral Health Problems

Oral Hygiene: Easy Maintenance for a Healthy Living
What is Oral Hygiene?

The mouth is considered to be the gateway to the body. Good Oral hygiene is crucial not just for dental care but also for the well-being of one’s body. Oral hygiene is that aspect of oral care which covers keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy as much as possible and in turn free of diseases. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, using an antibacterial mouth and flossing daily to clean in between your teeth helps in ensuring that your smile lasts a lifetime.

What are the 7 common Oral health-related problems?

Out of all the Oral health-related complications that occur due to insufficient attention towards oral hygiene the 7 most common ones are as follows-

Toothache due to cavities

Cavities also referred to as caries or tooth decay are areas of the tooth that have been damaged permanently and potentially have holes in them. Cavities are fairly common. They occur when bacteria, food, and acid coat your teeth and form a plaque. The acid on your teeth starts to eat away at the enamel and then the underlying dentin, or connective tissue. Over time, this can lead to permanent damage.

 Teeth-Staining

Teeth staining is one of the most common problems that people all around the globe face be it due to the factor of age or predisposing factors. Certain foods, medications, tobacco, and trauma are some of the things that can potentially discolour one’s teeth.

 Gingivitis

Gum diseases, which are also referred to as Gingivitis, is the inflammation of the gums. It usually is the consequence of plaque builds upon one’s teeth due to poor dental hygiene habits. This condition makes your gums swell, redden and bleed when you brush or floss. Untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, a more serious infection. Gum diseases have been associated with causing heart strokes.

 Chipped tooth

Chipping of the tooth has been considered as the number 1 type of dental injury. An accident can cause a chip, chewing on a hard substance or conditions such as bruxism are a few examples of what can act as the potential cause of a tooth chip.

 Misaligned teeth

Straightening crooked teeth and aligning the bite doesn’t just make for a smile aesthetically pleasing. It plays a crucial part in improving overall dental health, relieving symptoms like jaw pain etc.

  Wisdom Teeth

Complications with your wisdom teeth can cause cavities, damage to the neighbouring teeth, and potential gum diseases. Wisdom teeth generally occur between the age group of 17 and 25.

 Cracked Tooth

A tooth can crack due to an injury to the mouth, chewing hard foods, or even grinding of teeth at night known as Bruxism. A cracked tooth can be very painful. The crack can often offer as a place for bacteria buildup and affects overall dental hygiene.

Final Note

Poor oral health can contribute to multiple issues in one’s life. It also affects the comfort and overall quality of life. At times plenty of oral health issues aren’t noticeable at first therefore seeing a dentist regularly for a check-up is the best way to diagnose any problem before it gets out of hand. Keep it simple, maintain a good oral hygiene for a healthy lifestyle. Remember, it all starts from mouth. Don’t neglect the gateway to your body: Your Mouth
