The foundation of The Dental college was laid in 2001 and had been approved and recognized by the Dental council of India. From a Humble beginning of 100 Students this Institute over the years has now grown to be called as a Hub for complete Dental Education. The college is affiliated to Maharashtra University of health sciences, Nasik.

The institution conducts courses in BDS, MDS, & Diploma Courses in dentistry. With an intake capacity of 100 students for BDS, only the best makes it through to be a part of the finest Institution. The institution is proud of its experienced faculty with good technical knowledge and scientific publications. With Facilities like excellent infrastructure, good patient inflow, and a library with variety of books, journals which is also equipped with a cutting-edge E-library the Institute really gives their heart and Soul for their students.

The institution serves five well equipped and fully functional satellite clinics & a mobile dental van catering to rural camps held by the institution. A special healthcare program has been launched for the Navi Mumbai Police Force and the School Children of the area. Continuing Dental Education Programs are regularly organized to upgrade the knowledge and skill of staff and students alike. The institution blends academics with scientific and extracurricular activities seamlessly and harmoniously leading to overall development of its students. DEPARTMENTS:

Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology
Oral medicine is the speciality of dentistry that is concerned with the oral health care of medically compromised patients and with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of medically related disorders or conditions affecting the oral maxillofacial region. Following are the Visions of the department:

Identification of the relations of oral and systemic health.
Management of pharmacotherapeutics essential for treatment of oral and systemic diseases.
Research, teaching, continuing education and patient care.
Prevention and treatment of disorders of salivary gland disease, Orofacial pain and other disorders of oral mucous membranes.
Infrastructure

The Department has an Oral Medicine Section, OPD, Oral Medical Clinical area, Clinical Discussions area, Oral Radiology Section, intraoral x-ray machine, Panoramic Radiography (OPG), Darkroom Processing area, Digital Panoramic X ray machine.

 Oral Pathology and Laboratory

The oral pathology laboratory accepts biopsy and surgical tissue specimens for histopathological evaluation and diagnosis from other dental departments. The department undertakes diagnostic procedures such as routine haematological investigations, punch biopsies, Fine needle aspiration cytology and Exfoliative cytology. The laboratory also serves as a resource for research projects undertaken by the faculty of the College. A fully functional and well equipped Oral Precancer/Cancer detection Centre for screening any Precancerous and cancerous lesions by trained dental personnel also adds to the department’s list.

Department of Oral Surgery
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is Bridge between Dental & Medical Specialties. The Department is fully equipped with the latest surgical instruments and dedicated faculty. It treats various disorders affecting the Head & Neck such as Trauma, Pathology, Cancer, Congenital Defects and Dentofacial Deformities ranging from Cleft lip and palate to Syndromes. It is one of the few Maxillofacial Units in the country to offer microvascular reconstructive options to its patients. With continuing Educational Activities and National Workshops organized since last 5 years the Department has put MGM Dental College on both National & International Map.

Infrastructure

The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology is spread across an area of 4400 sq. ft. It is well equipped with practical lab for the undergraduate students, a seminar room for the postgraduates and undergraduate students, museum displaying various specimens of Dental anatomy and Oral Pathology and, departmental library, research room and histopathology lab. The histopathology lab consists of a semiautomatic microtome and is well equipped for routine as well as special staining procedures. In addition to the histopathology lab, the department also has a complete clinical laboratory set up for routine laboratory investigations. The research lab consists of research microscope with polarizing, phase contrast and dark field illumination attachments with a good photomicrography set up and an image analyser software.

Department of Pedodontics
Paediatric dentistry encompasses a variety of disciplines, techniques, procedures, and skills that share a common basis with other specialties but are modified and adapted to the unique requirements of infants, children, adolescents, and those with special health care needs. The Department is responsible for smile restorations in children who can barely speak up their problems thus enabling Students to be future ready in treating patients.

Paediatric dentistry is an age-defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. By being an age-specific specialty, paediatric dentistry encompasses disciplines such as behaviour guidance, care of the medically and developmentally compromised and disabled patient, supervision of orofacial growth and development, caries

prevention, sedation, Dental treatment of child under General Anaesthesia and hospital dentistry, as well as other traditional fields of dentistry.

These skills are applied to the needs of children throughout their ever-changing stages of development and to treating conditions and diseases unique to growing individuals. “Every child has a fundamental right to his total oral health. The society has an obligation to fulfil this faith.”

Infrastructure

The department is well equipped with 25 dental chairs, Provision for Dental treatment under general anaesthesia, Minor Surgery room facility, Well illuminated spacious play area for the children, Isolation area and x-ray room.

Unique state of art satellite centre at MGM School, Nerul, to provide a comprehensive oral health care to school children right from nursery till 10th standard.

The Department is active in gathering the data and reports on local, state and national level concerning the oral health status and overall health status of children. It also organises camps in Navi Mumbai region to increase the awareness about the importance of oral health in young children.

The 2 missions of the Department are:

Develop and implement special project activities that advance children’s oral health issues and public understanding of such, in accordance with ISPPD policies and guidelines.
To produce useful studies and analysis to further the understanding of practices which will contribute to the oral health of all children.
Department of Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion (crooked teeth) and abnormalities of the dento-facial region.

Department of orthodontics trains and educates the students to be competent in treating and managing patients who require preventive, interceptive and corrective care of crooked teeth and jaws. The teaching program includes extensive clinical and laboratory training of students in the areas of removable and fixed orthodontic appliances.

The Department caters to the needs of patients requiring correction of malposed teeth by fixed /removable appliances. Special care is taken to plan the treatment by interacting with other specialties on a regular basis.

Infrastructure

The Department has a Separate postgraduate Clinic, undergraduate clinic, post graduate lab, undergraduate lab, oral hygiene bay, technician lab, computer room, seminar room, Departmental Library with E-library, Museum, Sterilization Room, Post graduate student’s room, Faculty room’s and department stores. All consumable materials are freely available for use to the students and doctors for treating patients.

Department of Periodontics
The Department of Periodontics, MGM Dental College & Hospital, was established in 2004 with a vision to be a Department with International standards pertaining to academics and clinical therapeutics, providing state of the art Treatment facilities and newer innovative techniques and excel in the field of Clinical and Epidemiological Research in Periodontology. This branch of dentistry deals with the maintenance of the health of the teeth and their supporting structures. The treatment modalities range from simple procedures like cleaning of teeth, gum surgeries to advanced techniques like bone regeneration, implants and laser surgeries.

Infrastructure

The Department is equipped with 45 dental chair units with all auxiliary dental equipment and attachments. It has facilities like state-of-the-art oral prophylactic armamentarium, Ultrasonic scaler equipment, periodontal surgical armamentarium, diode lasers, electrosurgical units, Ultrasonic bone surgical units, Implantology equipment and armamentarium. The department caters to various patient categories in addition to their routine outpatients including geriatric and hospital inpatients. It also offers radiographic aides and laboratory investigations through their ISO certified laboratory to assist their therapeutic modalities. A full-fledged Medical hospital on campus to cater towards referrals and emergencies makes the department special.

Department of Conservative dentistry & Endodontics
The department of Conservative dentistry & Endodontics provides health care using cutting edge methods & technologies.

For patients, it offers a complete program of dental services with emphasis on preventive and restorative dentistry. It provides treatment of carious lesions with amalgam as well as Tooth-Coloured Aesthetic Restorations, Bleaching and Root Canal Procedures. The department saves teeth from routine extractions by Conservative Management. Dental students provide quality care at a minimal fee under the supervision of qualified senior faculty members.

Our mission of this department is to support the academic goals of the institution through teaching, patient care & research and to provide high quality didactic & clinical instruction to students in the discipline of Contemporary Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics.

Infrastructure

Dental Chairs: In terms of infrastructure, the department provides 39 dental chairs for patients at the under-graduate level and 11 chairs at the post-graduate level.

20-Seater Seminar Room, Library and Laboratory: The department also has a seminar room where presentations are delivered, and academic discussions are conducted. A small departmental library is adequately stocked with textbooks, which can be referred to by everybody.

For patients: excellent, affordable dental care.

Pre-clinical Section: Training in the second year of under graduation involves activities to be performed on teeth mounted on phantom heads before they enter clinics and start working on patients in the subsequent year.

Goals of the Department:

Promote and encourage continual and lifelong education of the dental professional beyond graduation, by presenting outstanding programs by recognized clinicians and educators who have demonstrated expertise in their respective fields of endeavour.
Disseminate new information and advancing technology for practical application by the dental professional.
Encourage and assist the dental professional to achieve higher levels of skills, knowledge, and competence.
From 2012, these Courses will be open to all Dentists who wish to widen their clinical horizons in Endodontics.
Sterilization & Equipment:

The department offers digital radiographic analysis to its patients The undergraduate students make use of a radiography unit placed in the department premises
The clinical skills of the operator are enhanced by several electronic devices like pulp testers and fibre optic illumination
Light cure composite kits are regularly used with the spirit of propagating aesthetic dentistry to the common man at very affordable prices
For enhanced patient and operator safety, the use of rubber dam kits is emphasized upon
Operator convenience and efficiency is greatly enhanced in the clinics with a four-handed dentistry approach
A kit for Bleaching of Discoloured Teeth and Rotary Endodontic Equipment is provided.
Thermoplasticized materials for root canal fillings, including Obtura II and Therma Prep.
Department of Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is the dental speciality responsible for diagnosis treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of patients with missing teeth and its associated structures using biocompatible substitutes.

Department of Prosthodontics trains and educates the students to be competent in treating and managing patients who require comprehensive replacement of missing teeth and Maxillofacial structures. The teaching programme includes extensive clinical and laboratory training of students in the areas of fixed and removable partial dentures, complete dentures, maxillofacial and implant Prosthesis.

Infrastructure:

The department has a separate postgraduate Clinic, undergraduate clinic and Special Clinic, post graduate lab, under graduate lab,  technician lab, Air-conditioned Ceramic room, computer room, polymer lab, Plaster lab, seminar room , Departmental Library with E-library, Museum, Pre-Clinical Dental Material Lab, Pre-Clinical Prosthodontic Lab, Crown & Bridge Lab,  Sterilization Room, Post graduate student’s room, Faculty room’s and department stores. The department is well equipped with fully functional 45 dental chairs. All consumable materials are freely available for use to the students and doctors for treating patients

Department of Community Dentistry
Public Health Dentistry is a branch of Dentistry which deals with preventing disease, prolonging life & promoting physical & mental efficiency through organized community efforts. The dental public Health field has been expanding in scope & complexity with more emphasis being placed on the total dental care delivery system & its impact on Oral Health Status.

Goals of the Department:

The goal of the Public Health dentistry department is to provide basic & advanced Health promotion to an individual and group of people.
Prevention of dental diseases & awareness of Oral hygiene in rural population.
To provide Basic treatment in rural areas through mobile dental clinic.
The main goal of the Public Health Dentistry is to achieve good oral hygiene & health awareness in public through organized community efforts.
Infrastructure:

The department is equipped with Outpatient clinic for undergraduates along with a seminar room and a Dental museum for imparting health education which is located adjacent to the department. It also operates outreach centres in the vicinity where comprehensive oral care is rendered to the needy with an elaborate referral system for more specialized care. A fully equipped mobile dental van is available to reach the population deprived of oral health services.

Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology
It is the specialty of dentistry which deals with the assessment of patient’s overall health status and its impact on oral health care. The goal is to develop the dental student’s knowledge and skill in comprehensive patient evaluation and diagnosis. The department educates the future dentists and dental specialists through its Undergraduate (BDS) course as well as postgraduate (MDS) professional degree. The educational program of the department is comprised of a broad range of didactic and clinical activities catering to undergraduate and post-graduate students. The Department forms the cornerstone of the CDC (Cancer Detection Centre) which is the first ever centre in India started in an institution for the welfare of the community.

Infrastructure:

The Department is well equipped with practical lab for the undergraduate students, a seminar room for the postgraduates and undergraduate students, museum displaying various specimens of Dental anatomy and Oral Pathology and, departmental library, research room and histopathology lab. Department of Implant Dentistry:
The Central implant clinic is an integral part of M.G.M.dental college equipped with 2 dental chairs (programmable), 2 implant kits and physio dispensers of different manufacturers namely EZ-HITEC (lifecare) and UNITI (equinox),R.V.G. and all necessary surgical instruments and materials such as bone graft, membranes etc. Other than these two companies the department offers other implants such as Dentsply, Osstem etc. to the patient.

Staff from the departments of Oral surgery, Periodontology and Prosthodontics post patients here and operate on them. Before any surgery, the case is discussed amongst the panel of doctors regarding the treatment plan and outcome of the treatment. A patient can place implant in the college at a very affordable rate thus helping the patients save thousands of rupees behind the treatment.

College Activities

Apart from Classroom Education the college is active in extra circular activities to build an all-round development amongst the students. These activities help the students to understand the real-world issues and gives them an opportunity to execute them thus enabling them to be Future ready.

No Tobacco Initiative– As part of the initiative FOR training Session for Doctors to help Patients for Tobacco Cessation, MGM Dental College partnered with an NGO LIFE FIRST to conduct a LEVEL 1 Training for all students and faculty on the 11th of March.

The training modules are developed in collaboration with the Dana Farber / Harvard Cancer Centre, Boston, USA and the trainings were conducted by Life First Tobacco Treatment Specialists trained and certified by the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Centre, Rochester, USA.

The level 1 training was a full day programme and was an educational session on basic (yet essential) topics such as prevalence of tobacco use in India, various products being used and commonly used brands. Information was provided on various health effects of tobacco and the contents of its products. Participants were sensitized about tobacco cessation by providing them with the basic knowledge on dependence, benefits of quitting and commonly used models of cessation.  This training session included role-plays for participants to give them hands-on experience of dealing with situations.

Other Initiative and activities conducted by the College include Regular NSS residential Camps, Swachh Bharat Mission, how to be Smart Investor, National Yoga day, No Tobacco Day, Women’s day Celebration, National Unity Day etc. Conducting Regular events is the top priority of the college.

MGM Cleft and Craniofacial Center in association with Maaya Foundation

A cleft and Craniofacial Surgery unit was started at MGM Hospital, in partnership with Maaya Foundation and MGM Institute of Health Sciences (MGMIHS) in order to cater to the large patient population of Rural areas adjoining Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, who are not able to access these facilities easily.

The Project was possible due to generous funding from TATA Trust.
MOU between MGMIHS and Maaya Foundation was signed in September 2015 and the first case was operated on 3rd September 2015.
Many patients till date have undergone successful surgeries, completely free of cost
Aims and Objectives of this foundation:

To identify and mobilize all patients born with Cleft and Craniofacial Deformities to MGMIHS.
To carry out educational programs in order to create awareness about the above-mentioned deformities, with emphasis on preventive aspects to expecting mothers.
To do high quality research in this field to find new preventive and treatment strategies.
To provide patients with specialist consultation in the fields of Surgery, Anaesthesia, Paediatrics, ENT; all free of cost.
To provide all patients with comprehensive services like Dentistry, Nutrition, Speech Therapy and Orthodontics; all free of cost.
To make the centre sustainable and to take care of the huge burden of care, training facilities for Surgeons and Anaesthesiologist from across the globe will be launched, especially to build skilled human resource in areas of great need.
Facilities provided through the Centre:

To and Fro transportation fares as per the state transport department for patient and parent.
Lodging and food to patient and one parent if patient above 5 years age and two parents if below 5 years of age, in general wards.
Free surgery including all the medicines, surgical materials and Operating room charges.
Comprehensive care which includes Dental and Orthodontic treatment, Nutritional counselling for malnourished infants, Speech therapy sessions for all cleft palate patients.
Other incidentals like Paediatric Intensive care unit, Blood Bank, etc.
Community Health Programmes. MGM cares for the Community

Oral disease affects every community. It is the responsibility of local public health agencies (LPHAs) which includes dental institutions to assess the oral health needs of the communities and to develop policies and programs to help ensure that those needs are met.

The oral Health Program leads the Department of public Health’s efforts to improve and maintain the oral health of Navi Mumbai citizens by promoting and developing quality, cost-effective community and school-based preventive, educational and treatment programs which emphasize elimination of oral health disparities.
