CBCT In Modern Dentistry

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an advanced imaging technique primarily used in dental and medical fields for detailed three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the head, neck, and oral structures. Unlike traditional CT scans, which use a fan-shaped x-ray beam, CBCT employs a cone-shaped x-ray beam that captures a large volume of data in a single rotation around the patient, typically within a matter of seconds. This process results in high-resolution, 3D images of bones, teeth, soft tissues, and other structures, offering enhanced accuracy and clarity. CBCT is particularly valuable in dentistry for tasks such as implant planning, root canal treatment, orthodontics, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) analysis. It also plays a crucial role in evaluating pathologies like tumors, cysts, and fractures. Compared to traditional CT scans, CBCT offers a lower radiation dose, making it a safer option for repeated imaging. The technology allows for detailed assessment of both hard and soft tissues, providing a comprehensive view for more informed diagnosis and treatment planning. The data acquired from CBCT can be used to create 3D models for surgical planning, and it helps in visualizing complex anatomical structures with great precision, significantly enhancing the accuracy of procedures. CBCT has revolutionized areas such as orthodontics and oral surgery, where precise imaging is critical for optimal outcomes.
