Integrated approach to management of TMJ disorders.

The cause of Temporomandibular joint Disorders cannot be pinned to a single one. Multiple reasons have been associated with TMDs in the past like malocclusion , trauma , stress , genes, female gender. But current understating through the lense of biopsychosocial model explains the role of these factors only as a predisposing one.

Even while managing these set of conditions one needs to keep in mind the inadvertent participation of each of these components and define management goals according to individual patient socioeconomic condition.

Highlights

-  Multifactorial Etiology: TMDs arise from a combination of factors like malocclusion, trauma, stress, genetics, and gender, with none being solely responsible.

  • Biopsychosocial Model: Current understanding emphasizes the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors as predisposing elements rather than direct causes.
  • Individualized Assessment: Each patient's unique combination of contributing factors must be evaluated to tailor an effective treatment approach.
  • Comprehensive Management: Goals should address all contributing components, including physical, emotional, and environmental aspects.
  • Socioeconomic Considerations: Management strategies must align with the patient's socioeconomic status for practical and sustainable outcomes.
