Role of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography In Upper Airway Analysis

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become an important diagnostic modality for upper airway evaluation in dental practice. It provides comprehensive three-dimensional visualization of the airway from the nasal cavity to the superior trachea, along with adjacent craniofacial structures including the jaws, cranial base, cervical spine, and facial soft tissues.  Compared with two-dimensional imaging and conventional computed tomography, CBCT enables detailed assessment of airway volume, shape, and cross-sectional dimensions, allowing identification of sites of maximal airway constriction through volumetric assessment and cross-sectional analysis using specialized software. CBCT facilitates evaluation of anatomical and developmental relationships between the airway and surrounding craniofacial structures and aids in the detection of skeletal and soft tissue variations that predispose to airway compromise. Although soft tissue contrast is limited, indirect indicators of inflammatory conditions may be identified. Given the increasing prevalence and underdiagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, CBCT-based airway assessment has gained relevance as a screening tool in dental practice. Overall, CBCT provides a static, objective, and reproducible three-dimensional assessment of airway anatomy, complementing dynamic diagnostic modalities in the evaluation of upper airway disorders.

This webinar provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), with emphasis on understanding orthogonal planes and the normal anatomy of the upper airway. Participants will gain insight into viewing and analyzing the airway using CBCT software, recognizing normal anatomical variations, and identifying pathologies associated with reduced airway spaces. The session also includes a brief discussion on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its relevance in practice.
