What are Tonsil Stones? 

Tonsil stones are also referred to as Tonsilloliths. These are hard white or yellow formations, which are sometimes painful parts of bacteria/ food located on or inside the tonsils. Tonsils are glands at the back of your throat. These are made of cells that prevent and fight infections. Many experts think your tonsils play a role in your immune system. 

What are the symptoms of Tonsil Stones? 

Not all tonsils are noticeable, but they can still cause noticeable symptoms.  

Trouble in swallowing 
Persistent cough 
Bad breath/ Halitosis 
Smaller tonsil stones may not cause any symptoms. These are more prevalent 
Sore throat 
Ear pain 
Swollen tonsils 
White/Yellowish on the tonsil 
What Causes Tonsil Stones? 

Tonsils are loaded with crannies wherein bacteria, dead cells, food particles, and mucus can get trapped.  This leads to the accumulation and formation of debris. Tonsil stones form when debris calcifies. The occurrence of small tonsilloliths is more prevalent, and it’s infrequent to have a large tonsil stone. 

What are the treatments available for Tonsil Stones? 

It isn’t always the case that Tonsil stones treatment is necessitated. These Tonsil stones often end up either dissolve on their own or are coughed up. For stones that do not go away on their own, which are generally the larger Tonsil stones, there are numerous types of treatments: 

Antibiotics 
Antihistamines to reduce allergies
Laser treatment helps in minimizing or removal of the tonsil pockets where the debris is accumulated.
Coblation
In Tonsillectomy, the tonsils’ removal is usually considered the last resort done for the larger tonsils. This prevents the recurrence of Tonsil Stones.  
Home Remedies 

Gargling 

Gargling with a saline mixture, i.e., salt and water, can ease throat pain and help dislodge tonsil stones. It can also help get rid of the bad breath resulting from tonsil stones can cause. 

Cough 

Vigorous coughing can help loosen stones. 

 Prevention of Tonsil Stones 

Ways to prevent Tonsil stones are as follows: 

Maintaining good oral hygiene. 
Brush twice a day and floss regularly 
Gargle regularly with an antibacterial mouthwash 
Drink plenty of water. 
Quit smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol 
Reduce consumption of carbonated beverages such as sodas. 
Reduce consumption of Sugary or processed food 
Limit dairy products. 
Final Note 

Tonsil Stones pose a prevalent dental ailment that can hamper our very fundamentals, such as speaking and breathing. The frequent occurrence of these stones indicates terrible oral hygiene. Visiting a dentist would be the best way to ensure the prevention and diagnosis of such debris accumulation.
