What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

5 common types of Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Having a perfect and glistening smile has been of top priority since ages. Although, the pursuit of getting that perfect smile really picked up during the 90’s and has been growing ever since. The term “Cosmetic Dentistry” was coined in the1990’s.

Cosmetic Dentistry refers to the dental work or dentistry which focuses on transforming chipped, discoloured, mis-shapen or mis-aligned teeth or as we can say that it focuses essentially on the dental aesthetics to bring you that ideal smile.

5 types of Cosmetic Dentistry procedures in India

Cosmetic Teeth Whitening –
Considered as one of the most common and basic dental cosmetic treatment, is also referred to as Teeth Bleaching. This procedure is used for whitening and brightening our teeth. The bleaches used are either Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide. These are effective as they break the stains into smaller parts making them less concentrated therefore resulting in whiter teeth. Although, keep in mind not all teeth can be bleached. To know more about this consult your dentist.

 Cosmetic Tooth Bonding
This is a great and widely used procedure used for people whose teeth have been badly decayed, stained, chipped or broken. This procedure uses a putty-like resin which is bonded/adhered to the tooth and then it is hardened with Ultraviolet light. The dentist then sculpts it into a desired shape and polishes it.

Cosmetic Dental Veneers
Dental Veneers have been used by dental professionals since ages. These are made from medical grade ceramics. Dental veneers are typically wafer-thin and are custom made shells. These are used to treat teeth that are highly stained and cannot be bleached or slightly crooked and chipped teeth.

Cosmetic Dental Implants
This procedure is instrumental when there is a loss of tooth. A titanium implant is inserted inside the jaw surgically. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted titanium post, anchoring it securely in the jaw and providing a foundation for a replacement tooth.

Cosmetic Dental Crowns
Dental crowns also known as ‘Caps’ are custom made to fit an individual’s tooth. The cap is used to fit over the decayed, badly stained or chipped tooth. It is also used to protect a weak tooth or make-up for a large gap between teeth.

It is usually made of porcelain fused with metal to make the crown stronger.

Final Note-

Cosmetic dentistry is a method of professional oral care that focuses on improving the appearance of one’s gums, teeth and assures a flawless smile. The mentioned above are one of few methods in cosmetic dentistry which have been used for ages and have proven to result in an aesthetically beautiful smile. Dentistry is India and all across the globe would largely revolve around Cosmetic procedures
