POST Covid Effect - Mucormycosis & Osteomyelitis of Facial Bone ...an Endemic in Pandemic

ABOUT THE SESSION:  

0.1 to to 1 percent of COVID-19 patients are affected by coinfections like Fungal infection known as Mucormycosis & Osteomyelitis of Facial Bone. This disease is very aggressive and is affecting along all paranasal sinuses and in few cases the procedure involves the removal of orbit & brain as well. It's an emergency to evaluate such cases and start with antifungal & aggressive debridement with Medical Management. Also, step should be taken for prevention of Mucormycosis. 

KEY TAKE HOME POINTS:  

• Early diagnosis & aggressive debridement along with Amphotericin is a best option for better prognosis. 
• Multidisciplinary approach is needed during the course of treatment 
• Interim prosthesis should be given to the patient. 
• Post-surgical follow -up is mandatory. 
• Predisposing factors: 

1. Systemic diseases Like Diabetes  
2. Use of Steroids  
3. Long Hospitalization of patient on Mask & Ventilator.
