Sports Dentistry – A New Career Dimension In Dentistry

OBJECTIVE :

After completing this lecture the participant should be able to have a greater understanding of sports dentistry and how a dental professional can explore this new dimension.

In last 2 decades, there has been a steady rise in playing various sports in India, esp. contact sports. With more and more people opting for contact sports reaching at the top international levels like in Olympics, there is a high incidence of dental trauma in many sports. Dental injuries can be easily prevented and there is also a possibility to dramatically reduce the occurrence levels by the use of mouthguards that protect all dental and periodontal structures. A good properly fitted mouthguard can boost athlete’s confidence & can keep the oral and facial structures intact. But there is lack of knowledge and awareness among the athletes, coaches, parents and even the dentists and other medical personnel regarding injury prevention by using mouthguards and immediate & long term management of dento-facial injuries. Also oral health is known to affect the general health which in case of athletes holds very true. Inspite of having a good fitness level, a bad oral health can hamper the athlete’s concentration and performance while playing. This too can be easily prevented by doing pre-season dental check-ups and preventive dental treatments in athletes. That is why, it is necessary to introduce Sports Dentistry as a new branch of dentistry in India. Sports dentistry is one of the most recent and upcoming field in dentistry. It mainly includes the prevention and management of athletics-related orofacial injuries & associated oral diseases.
