Laser in the field of dentistry had lot of contributions such as disinfection, cavity preparation, operculectomy, flap surgeries, freenectomy, bleeching and photo biomodulation. It has unique properties such as when its comes in contact with biological tissue it gets absorbed mainly due to presence of free water molecules, proteins, pigments and other macromolecules. Absorption mainly depends on wavelength of the incoming laser irradiation. It is categorized into hard tissue and soft tissue laser. Soft tissue laser had made tremendous usage in the field of dentistry, where as hard tissue laser because of its cost effectiveness and mode of application is difficult, its usage is restricted. Laser technology appears to have a promising future in dentistry.
