Trismus, or restricted mouth opening, is a common clinical finding that can significantly interfere with dental examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Although often encountered in association with odontogenic infections or postoperative conditions, trismus may also be the first clinical manifestation of temporomandibular joint disorders, trauma, malignancy, systemic disease, or other serious underlying pathology.
This webinar will provide a practical, clinically oriented approach to the evaluation of trismus in general dental practice. The session will focus on the clinical definition and assessment of restricted mouth opening, relevant history and examination, differential diagnosis, identification of red-flag features, and appropriate investigations. Particular emphasis will be placed on distinguishing common odontogenic causes from conditions requiring urgent referral or specialist management.
The webinar will also discuss initial management strategies, indications for imaging and referral, and practical considerations when providing dental treatment to patients with limited mouth opening. Through clinical scenarios and case-based discussion, participants will learn how to approach trismus systematically and recognize when a seemingly simple presentation may indicate a more significant underlying condition.
Learning Objective:
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to systematically evaluate a patient with trismus, identify potential causes and red flags, initiate appropriate management, and determine when specialist referral is warranted.
