What is Laser Dentistry?

Lasers are typically used to alter hard and soft tissues in number of dental procedures. There are two types of Lasers, Soft Tissue Lasers and the Hard Tissue Lasers. The soft tissue Lasers are used to cut and remove soft gum tissue, making them useful in procedures, such as creating the required hole around the gum for improved visibility and dental access and reshaping the gums for aesthetic purposes. Soft tissue lasers work best in removal of excess gum tissue or release over tightly muscle attachments in the mouth or for better treatment of ulcers and cold sores. Soft tissue Lasers are vividly used in Periodontal diseases such as Treatment of Gum Infection by taking out the infected Lining of Gum tissue.

Hard tissue Lasers as the name suggest are used to Cut Hard tissue in the mouth for e.g. the teeth. The Types of Lasers used primarily include the Er: YAG and the Er, Cr: YSGG lasers. Procedures such as tooth decay, cavity preparation for filling placement, preparation of a tooth for a root canal and etch the tooth enamel so a filling can bond to it can be easily executed with the help of Hard Tissue Lasers.
